C2C opportunities ***** CAN YOU HELP ?? *****

Dear Tyneside, Wearside & Teesside Volunteers,
Greetings from a sun-drenched Manchester! I trust you are all benefitting from the great spring weather just in time (we hope) for the Easter break.
This is an early call for your help from your Sustrans Team in the North East. We are planning a major clean up day on the iconic C2C route in the Stanley area.
We need your help with this. We both invite and request you and your friends and colleagues to join in on a taskday we are organising. It is an area without very many volunteers so we want to focus on getting a great job done, promoting Sustrans and the NCN to the wider public and possibly recruiting people form the local community to help us out and perhaps to become C2C Volunteers. So what's the plan?...
Event: Spring Cleaning the C2C.
Tasks: Painting, pruning, Litter picking, signing, milepost sprucing and stallholding
Where?: C2C track close to Shield Row, Annfield Plain, Stanley
  http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&ll=54.866507,-1.720423&spn=0.003433,0.006899&t=h&z=17&iwloc=0004a14b6ffe8b875183b&msid=218416446099173065426.0004a14b6e595008d0e88
When?: Saturday May 21st 2011
Timing?: Meet at site 09:30 for a brew and a 10:00 start.
Sustrans staff present?: Yes - a combination of some or all of Mike Dagley, Graham Johnson & Catherine Smith will be on hand to help set up the day, raise the stall and work alongside vols, supporters and local people to tidy up this important and historical part of the NCN.
Where is the equipment coming from?: Sustrans will provide tools, gloves, goggles, brushes etc and materials pus a stove, gazebo, table and display stuff, banners and flags.
Insurance?: All volunteers and others helping us on this task day will be covered by Sustrans Public Liability insurance
Expenses?: All Sustrans volunteers are offered basic/reasonable expenses should you be out of pocket due to travel on public transport etc.
Sustrans needs you to help with some or all the following;
  • Put the date in your diary and plan to join us out on site for a time
  • Tell you friends, family, colleagues, bank managers, postmen, everyone(!) to come and join in too.
  • Help us prepare a Risk Assessment or do a Site Safety talk
  • Put together a stall and help man it during the day. A chance to speak to path users and to tell the Sustrans story. We need 2 or 3 to help do this
  • Help fire up a stove, watch a kettle to make drinks and snacks for the volunteers
  • Take photographs
  • Write a short artivcle about the day for local papers/Sustrans magazine
We will be there but it woul dbe more fun to have you with us!

Public's views sought on tunnel signs

Members of the public in North Tyneside and South Tyneside are being asked for their views on new wayfinding signs directing cyclists and pedestrians through the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels.

People can go online at www.tynepedestrianandcyclisttunnels.co.uk to see the proposed signage and register their views within the 'We Would Like Your Views' section.

Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (TWITA) officials will also be present at the Area Forums for Wallsend (2 March) and North Shields (30 March) and at the Jarrow Community Area Forum (10 March) to discuss the new signage.

Cliff Jessett, Project Manager for TWITA, said: "There are plans for a major revision of signage around the public transport system, including the Metro.

"The Transport Authority is planning a £6 million refurbishment of the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels and would like to see usage increase from the current 20,000 journeys per month.

"We have therefore been thinking about how best to advertise the tunnels through a new suite of wayfinding signs – the tunnel's 'Sunday best' name is too long for 'finger' signs and suggested alternatives have proved unsatisfactory.

"Before we commit to the new signs we want the public to let us know what they think."

Offical Opening of the BMX Track

Hello Rangers!
On the 12th March the Friends of Gallagher Park in Bedlington are holding an official launch day for their new BMX track. They have been a brilliant community group to work with and we have based our Connect2 route in Bedlington around this traffic-free East-West link. Does anyone fancy helping me on a stall?
the details are below and it should be a great day. i would like to have a stall from 11am to 4pm so even if you could spare an hour that would be great!
with any luck our Connect2 route will be completed by then at this point too. the national BMX champion is coming up too!
you can see how great the project is in Bedlington!
as usual we can pay reasonable expenses and would provide some food on the day (there are local sandwich shops if the burger van turns out to be a washout!).
if you can help or want more information please can you respond to catherine.smith@sustrans.org.uk

Hi Phil, I was out on my way to ponteland this morning [sunday] dropped down to access route and found one of the rubbish bags [from thursdays clean up] split open and contents all a round,
managed to get up to backworth before, turning back due to light drizzle,
I cycled down to the percy main area and the three lots of cut backs are still lying there.
The photos atttached are 3 taken on saturday after my 2 hour stint and 1 of the Iron man area, note the rubbish has been set fire too,
and on a safety matter the electic cover, on the lamp post has been removed. ken

Three days of works for Tyne Pedestrian Tunnel

The pedestrian tunnel under the River Tyne is to close for three days from Wednesday 9th to Friday 11th February inclusive for investigation works prior to a proposed £6 million refurbishment.

All tunnel users will use the adjacent cyclist tunnel during the closure.  Cyclists will be expected to dismount whilst in the tunnel.

The Tyne & Wear Integrated Transport Authority, which owns the Grade II-listed tunnels between Howdon and Jarrow, will use the closure to undertake investigation works under the floor of the pedestrian tunnel.

The Authority's project director Paul Fenwick, said: "We hope to keep inconvenience to a minimum by ensuring users can access the newly-refurbished lifts and the escalators at all times.

"We are well on the way to submitting an application for Listed Building Consent to the two local planning authorities of North Tyneside and South Tyneside to enable the major refurbishment works to go ahead.

"The closure of the pedestrian tunnel will give us the opportunity to look closely at the structure and inform our plans for the refurbishment."

The pedestrian tunnel will close from around 9am on Wednesday and is expected to reopen on Friday afternoon.

See Me Save Me...

From: kate cairns [mailto:kate.cairns@gmail.com]

Subject: See Me Save Me...(d, e)

Two years ago on Thursday 5th February 2009 my sister Eilidh, was run down by a tipper lorry in Notting Hill Gate whilst cycling to work. She died 2 hours later. She was 30. She was a strong experienced cyclist, commuting a 20mile round trip daily.
The coroner concluded that it was more likely than not Eilidh was ahead of the lorry, that she was available to be seen by the driver, and that the front offside bumper of the lorry made contact with the rear wheel of the cycle, causing it to fall and Eilidh to be caught up in the wheels.
Last year the driver pleaded guilty to driving with uncorrected defective vision and was given 3 points and a £200 fine. He said he did not see her. He is still driving his truck.

Heavy Goods Vehicles count for 45% of all London cyclist deaths but make up only 5% of road traffic. Across Europe 4000 people, mostly unprotected road users such as cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians are killed each because of HGV blind spots.
Our local Member of European Parliament is proposing a change to EU legislation to have HGVs fitted with sensors and cameras to remove their blind spots with Written Declaration 81.
We have a ready-made letter, which is translated, along with the actual WD, into all 23 languages across the EU. (Contact me if you cant find the link to your language)
1.     PLEASE email the letter to ALL of your MEPs ASAP. It will take less than 2 minutes. We have a link to the letter, and to your MEPs.
In order to be effective this declaration needs to be signed by half of the 736 MEPs. There are only 72 MEPs in the UK.
2.     PLEASE forward this email to as many contacts as possible far and wide across Europe. Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain,  France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Finland, Sweden
The WD lapses in less than 2 weeks on Wed 16th Feb.  Please act swiftly.
If you want to do more:
3.     PLEASE come to Strasbourg for 15th and/or 16th Feb to lobby MEPs as they go into the session.
We are taking Eurostar on Monday 14th Feb, returning Wednesday 16th Feb.
4.     PLEASE come to Hyde Park Corner 11.30-12.30 on Monday 14th Feb, for a media event, before we leave for Strasbourg
All the links are here www.eilidhcairns.com/campaign
We really appreciate 3 minutes of your time to do 1 and 2. It can help save lives. Lives that are cherished and sorely lost.
Apologies for any cross-posting.

pot hole fixing in North Tyneside

Anyone who would like to report a pot-hole can contact the council either:
- Completing the on-line form on the council's website atwww.northtyneside.gov.uk - using the 'Report it' tap on the main home page.
- E-mail us on highways.environment@northtyneside.gov.uk
- Telephone 643 6130
- A pot-hole is characterised as being a defect in the road that measures 300mm or more in any direction and 40mm or more in depth
- The borough's busier roads and shopping centres are inspected monthly or three-monthly. The Highways Maintenance Team will normally inspect pot-holes within one day of them being reported. Our aim is to carry out repairs within 24 hours if they are considered an immediate danger to the public - and within ten days otherwise.
- There are different ways to fix a pot-hole. In many cases it is a simple localised repair where the loose material is removed and hot bituminous material is placed into the hole and then compacted. Where there is a cluster of holes together, we often dig out an area by machine to form larger squares, which are then filled with new road resurfacing material. In the severest cases we are either partially or fully resurfacing roads.

Eleanor Lane update

Update on Eleanor Lane proposal:
This was on the agenda for the last Cycling Forum but wasn't covered.  The proposal is for the construction of a new carriageway and footway between St Lawrence Road and Walker Road, including retaining wall structures and associated landscaping with alterations to Hadrian's Cycleway/Land Adjacent To Formers Shepherds Scrap Yard, Between Walker Road And St Lawrence Road, Byker
The latest news is that it has not yet gone to Planning Committee. If it is given approval the design will be the one on the planning portal website which has been available for comment for several months. The reference is 2010/1210/01/GRA if you want to look at it or comment at the Planning Portal.
I've checked and it is unlikely to be included in this month's planning meeting on 21st January so there is still time for comments to be made before the application goes to committee.
I will bring some copies of the plan to the Cycling Forum on Thursday 6 January (6pm, Bewick Dobson room, Civic Centre) but if you want to comment you need to do it through the planning portal in the Planning and Buildings section of the Newcastle City Council website - www.newcastle.gov.uk
I will also bring copies of a plan for signalising the junction of Walker Road and Ford Street with a toucan to improve cycle access. This is an initial plan and details have still to be finalised.

Bikes to Africa fundraising event Thurs 13th Jan 7.30pm at Cumberland Arms - pub quiz, disco and raffle draw

Recyke Y'Bike regularly sends bicycles to projects in  African countries via Re~cycle in Colchester.  So we can send more we are running a pub quiz and disco at the wonderful Cumberland Arms on Thursday 13th Jan from 7.30pm to 11.  All proceeds of tickets and raffle will be reserved for covering the increasing transport costs that hiring a lorry involves.
To buy tickets, a very reasonable £2.50 each, call in to Recyke Y'Bike in Byker ( http://www.recyke-y-bike.org )
or call 0191 265 4197 to reserve your entrance tickets.  You can also buy raffle tickets for bike related prizes including generous vouchers (to £200 value)  for our refurbished bicycles and other items on sale.

A recent article in the magazine Ride http://www.theridejournal.com/what_is_the_ride.html
by  a pastor in South Africa who runs the Bokamoso Bicycle Project pointed up the many benefits that your old bikes bring to communities without proper roads and non-existant public transport and also the inspiration that the work of Recyke Y'Bike and Re~Cycle brings to the people there.

So please help us do more and have a good time on Thursday 13th.

All the best
