Three days of works for Tyne Pedestrian Tunnel

The pedestrian tunnel under the River Tyne is to close for three days from Wednesday 9th to Friday 11th February inclusive for investigation works prior to a proposed £6 million refurbishment.

All tunnel users will use the adjacent cyclist tunnel during the closure.  Cyclists will be expected to dismount whilst in the tunnel.

The Tyne & Wear Integrated Transport Authority, which owns the Grade II-listed tunnels between Howdon and Jarrow, will use the closure to undertake investigation works under the floor of the pedestrian tunnel.

The Authority's project director Paul Fenwick, said: "We hope to keep inconvenience to a minimum by ensuring users can access the newly-refurbished lifts and the escalators at all times.

"We are well on the way to submitting an application for Listed Building Consent to the two local planning authorities of North Tyneside and South Tyneside to enable the major refurbishment works to go ahead.

"The closure of the pedestrian tunnel will give us the opportunity to look closely at the structure and inform our plans for the refurbishment."

The pedestrian tunnel will close from around 9am on Wednesday and is expected to reopen on Friday afternoon.
