Public's views sought on tunnel signs
Members of the public in North Tyneside and South Tyneside are being asked for their views on new wayfinding signs directing cyclists and pedestrians through the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels.
People can go online at www.tynepedestrianandcyclisttunnels.co.uk to see the proposed signage and register their views within the 'We Would Like Your Views' section.
Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (TWITA) officials will also be present at the Area Forums for Wallsend (2 March) and North Shields (30 March) and at the Jarrow Community Area Forum (10 March) to discuss the new signage.
Cliff Jessett, Project Manager for TWITA, said: "There are plans for a major revision of signage around the public transport system, including the Metro.
"The Transport Authority is planning a £6 million refurbishment of the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels and would like to see usage increase from the current 20,000 journeys per month.
"We have therefore been thinking about how best to advertise the tunnels through a new suite of wayfinding signs – the tunnel's 'Sunday best' name is too long for 'finger' signs and suggested alternatives have proved unsatisfactory.
"Before we commit to the new signs we want the public to let us know what they think."

Have reviewed their proposals and conclude it does not meet the requirements for signing NCN routes.
ReplyDelete1/. Appears to be mainly aimed at pedestrians between Jarrow Metro / Bus Stn to Ped / Cycle Tunnel to Howdon Metro.
2/. Signs much too large at 1.4m x 0.3 m (recommended max length 0.9m)
3/. X-ht of 38mm is way too big.
4/. Very limited information about NCN route apart from route number and small bike logo which incorrectly position behind the number.
5/ No destinations for cycle routes other than Jarrow and Howdon.
6/. White on Black signs NOT suitable for cycle routes as proved in NT by the Waggonways finger posts.
7/. Some cycle routes incorrectly shown on plans or do not exist ( ie. through Howdon Sewage works behind electric fence)
8/ Typos and anomalies in sign listings, NCN 12 !!!!
ST_FP-3 there is no Sustrans post at this location as its not on an NCN route at this point.
NT_FP_1: refers to NCN12 via Tunnel !!
NT_FP_2; The Coast is insufficient.
NT_FP_3 :- insufficient post height to add large Nexus signs. Nexus signs would dwarf existing NCN signs.
FYI:- signs are in ST stock for signing NCN 14 junction to Cycle Tunnel and Direct route via Straker St. to Tyne Dock
Cannot be put up until know layout of cycle route at Chaytor St.
I conclude it would be better if Nexus signs did NOT refer to NCN routes and leave that to Standard NCN signing i.e. White on Blue with correct symbols to Dft standards which cyclists recognise.
NCN routes shown incorrectly and one route shown through Howdon sewage works !!!
